2014 Kite Making Retreat
Big Foil Mega-Build
For the Summer Kitebuilding Retreat, Ben Huggett will lead a workshop on building parafoils. Big ones. Kites that will fill the sky all by themselves.
And if you want to lift a lot of laundry or tails, you can do that too.If you have ever been interested in building a large parafoil but just did not know how to get started, or where to get all that fabric, or how to cut out such a big kite, then this is the workshop for you.
And if you already have a large parafoil, or two, or ten, well this is your chance to build another one in a design you do not already have. Participants will have the option of choosing among several different large parafoils for the retreat.
The Shannon 50 - a traditional parafoil that packs a tremendous amount of lift.
PL Pilot in a 100 sq ft size - the classic lifter.
KAP Foil in a 100 sq ft size (9,2 m) - the modern design for stability and lifting.
Aside from the fact that they are all parafoils, these designs are all united by their use of single piece keels to simplify construction and bridling.
Ben will be teaching a couple of different edge binding or hemming options and assembly and sewing techniques for these big kites. Kits of fully cut parts (ribs, keels, face and tops) will be provided for the kite selected by the participant. Participants are encouraged to prepare their own appliques or designs for the face of the kite before the retreat.
Ben has obtained a limited supply of black super lightweight (0.5 oz) ripstop at an incredibly low price for anyone interested in creating a super ultralight version of one of these designs for those really low wind days
A sewing machine, thread, and the usual notions are required, Average sewing skills are needed for this class.
